For precision nonmetallic balls exhibiting high isotropic strength in demanding applications

Drake MG-10 Performance

Drake MG-10 is a high-strength thermoset epoxy and woven fabric composite that is converted into rod by rolling and molding the components of the material in layers to achieve the desired rod diameter. The composite’s inherent properties include high compressive strength and modulus, chemical resistance and dimensional stability.

Balls precision-machined from MG-10 rod exhibit a high degree of isotropic behavior that eliminates the shear fracturing and anisotropic properties of balls machined from typical laminate rod. Standard G-10 rod, for example,  is often referred to as “sheet rod” because it is made from plate. It is built up in fabric/ epoxy layers and then stripped into square bar and turned round into rod.

Performance in Machined Balls

Drake CNC-machines MG-10 rod into balls and supplies them under its Cannonball® trademark. Proper machining of the rod yields balls with a high degree of isotropic behavior, or performance that is consistent in all directions.

In sliding-sleeve sleeve frac tools, Drake MG-10 Cannonballs perform flawlessly, including in applications with ball to seat interferences of less than 2%. This strength and reliability are a capability that no other nonmetallic ball can match.

Performance benefits of Drake MG-10 composite balls also include:

  • Extreme resistance to deformation and shear
  • Precision tolerances and sphericity
  • Reliable and easy drill-out in downhole tools

Isotropic Rod for Other Applications

Due to the rolled and molded manufacturing method, MG-10 Rod is a composite with exceptionally high flexural strength and modulus. While MG-10 rod is ideal for machined balls, other round or long parts that need strength in all directions are also good candidates including those that require very strong nonmetallic round beams. Drake’s engineering team works with customers to determine if MG-10 is the right solution for their specific component designs.

MG10 affords exceptional isotropic properties in nonmetallic spherical bearings.

Typical Applications

  • Frac balls
  • High strength nonmetallic ball bearings
  • High strength nonmetallic spherical bearings
  • High strength and stiffness nonmetallic long round parts.
